a tool you use every single time you stitch

so why hasn't the humble embroidery hoop changed in 100 years?

thread catching on the screw. fabric slipping mid-project. a finished piece that needs a hook to hang and still looks unfinished. we've all been there – and we've all just accepted it. until now.

every hoop problem. solved.

Every other hoop
  • screw sits outside – visible and ugly
  • thread catches on the screw mid-stitch
  • needs a visual solution to display
  • difficult to tighten
  • fabric slips, loses tension over time
  • bamboo and flexi hoops can't hold tension
  • displays look homemade, not framed
Hoop and Layer
  • fastener is completely hidden inside the hoop
  • nothing to snag thread
  • included wall mount hides behind the hoop
  • included wrench gets it drum-tight in 5 turns
  • deep grooves lock fabric tension firmly
  • 12mm thick – substantial, not fragile-feeling
  • looks like properly framed art – because it is

a word from me
my first impression was: "wow, these are gooood", my second impression was: "holy shit, these are incredible"

I've been stitching for years. I've used Nurge, Elbesee, bamboo, flexi – the lot. I picked these up for the first time and immediately knew: these aren't just nicer hoops – they're a different category entirely.

no screw. no snag. no interruption.
the game changer

no screw. no snag. no interruption.

every other hoop puts the fastener on the outside – because that's how it's always been done. Hoop and Layer put it inside, and that single change fixes everything.

the honest bit

PLA & heat – what you actually need to know.

PLA starts to soften at around 57°C (135°F). in a typical home, that simply isn't a concern. the one thing to avoid is prolonged direct sunlight, which over many months can gradually fade the colour. display them anywhere indoors with confidence, but avoid sun-drenched spots and you're absolutely fine.

36°C / 65°Fsafety margin in normal UK conditions

FAQs

as well as the hoop itself you also get a mini wrench to tighten it properly with ease, and a matching colour wall mount with a Command Strip already attached.
the tightening nut sits entirely inside the outer hoop. once you place your fabric, it's completely out of sight. you tighten by hand first – push until you feel resistance – then use the included wrench for 5 final turns to lock it drum-tight. no distortion, no over-tightening, no guesswork.
yup! the mount sits behind the hoop and the hoop covers it entirely. from the front it genuinely looks like the piece is floating on the wall. the Command Strip means no nails, no damage, and it's easily removable and repositionable.
completely fine for typical homes. PLA begins to soften at around 57°C – typical indoor temperatures never come close to that. the only thing to avoid is prolonged direct sunlight, which over many months could gradually fade the colour. display them anywhere indoors with confidence. just avoid any sun-facing spots and you're absolutely fine.
good things come at a price as they say, right? but to be completely honest, these hoops are made by a small business in Australia, and shipping from Australia is quite expensive, as well as we gotta deal with double the taxes, yay. UK VAT is included in the price on all UK based orders.
I ship every Tuesday and Friday from the UK. if your order comes in before Tuesday 9AM, it goes out same day, same with Fridays. you'll receive tracking as soon as it's dispatched. if there's ever a delay – travel, stock wait – I update the shipping banner on this page so you always know what's happening.
if your order arrives damaged or faulty, contact me within 14 days with a photo and I'll sort it – replacement or refund, your choice. these are a first batch of a genuinely new product and I stand behind them completely. I'm a real person and I want you to be happy. message me.
Hoop and Layer recommend 1–2 thin layers of fabric or aida cloth. very thick materials or multiple dense layers may prevent the inner and outer hoop from seating properly. For standard embroidery, cross stitch, or linen work they're excellent.
the plan is yes – I've started with a focused first batch to test demand, and I intend to bring in the full range of 22 colours as stock sells through. sign up to the waitlist below and you'll hear as soon as new colours land.
the images and swatches shown are as accurate as I can make them, but screen calibration varies between devices – what looks terracotta on one screen can look more orange on another. if you're uncertain about a specific colour, message me before ordering and I'll describe it in person.
not yet, but I'm considering it. if enough people want one, I'll bring them in.

how to use

getting the best from your hoop.

it's easier than any other hoop you've used once you know the rhythm.

Step 1
01

find your hoop face vs butt

there is shiny and a matte side, the makers recommend the matte side = face, so let's go with that in out example, but it's totally up to you.

Step 2
02

separate the two parts

when matte side is facing you, twist the nut towards you (down) a few times. you'll notice the inner hoop ends will start to come towards each other.

Step 3
03

place your fabric

place the outer hoop on a hard surface shiny side facing you. then place your fabric over it, and place the inner hoop inside, sandwiching the fabric.

Step 4
04

tighten a little

use your finger to turn the nut away from you until you feel like if you picked it up, the fabric wouldn't slip out.

Step 5
05

stretch your fabric

go all around the hoop and stretch your fabric a little – no real stretch, just get out any wrinkles you might have.

Step 6
06

tighten the nut

then tighten the nut some more using your fingers until you start feeling resistance.

Step 7
07

use the wrench

alternate a nut twist with fabric stretch all around the hoop on each wrench turn (45 degrees at a time).

Step 8
08

it akes 5-6 turns

turn the nut using the wrench just 5-6 times in total. that's plenty for amazing fabric tension without hoop distortion.
